The
Hopkins River The Hopkins
River is one of Warrnambool's greatest natural treasures. For the past
150 years visitors and locals have enjoyed the tranquility offered by
this unique river system. With its high cliffs and abundant bird life
as well as many historic buildings there truly is something to interest
all passengers. The Hopkins
River originates near Ararat in Western Victoria and winds its way through
the western district connecting up with the southern ocean on the east
side of Warrnambool. It is a significant river system with a catchment
area of 8650 square kilometres and an annual discharge of 300 million
cubic metres of water. Fisherman
and bird enthusiasts alike will find a great range of both fish and bird
life on the Hopkins River such as black brim, estuarine perch and sea
mullet. Also home to white faced heron, black duck, little pied cormorant,
pelicans and royal spoon bill. During the
months of June, July and August the Hopkins River mouth and surrounding
beaches become a safe nursery to the playful southern right whales. Which
can be viewed clearly from the Hopkins mouth or from Logans Beach whale
platform. |
